4. Šterna - Parish Church of St. Michael

On the fourth leg of our hike, we continue walking along a paved road north of the Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel. After about 200 meters, we turn right and follow a path that leads to one of the must-see attractions of northwestern Istria: the Piski Desert. This area is perfect for explorers of all ages. The mere sight of the marlstone dunes is breathtaking, and climbing from one hill to another offers an adrenaline-filled adventure, especially for children.

Walking through the Istrian desert can feel like journeying through an exotic or fantastical land. Still, it can also evoke elements of the Old Testament, reminiscent of Moses’ pilgrimage through the desert! Spending a few hours here feels like immersing in a captivating adventure novel. After exploring the desert, we return to the original path and continue straight, following a route that partly winds through pine forests and low vegetation. After about 800 meters, we arrive at the local cemetery in Šterna, specifically at the Church of St. Cancian.

Šterna

The picturesque and peaceful village of Šterna is situated on a hilly plateau between Marušići and Oprtalj. Historically, it was known as the “Grožnjan reservoir” due to its inexhaustible water source, which feeds six streams in the valley north of the church.

As we approach Šterna, the Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel immediately catches the eye. Located near a freshwater spring below the settlement, the church was built in 1746. It houses a large crucifix and a valuable back section of the altar from the late 16th century. The bell tower dates back to 1791.

Šterna lies on a geological boundary between limestone and flysch zones. Its unplastered houses are made partly of characteristic grey sandstone and partly of white limestone, making them a remarkable and unique example of traditional Istrian rural architecture. Today, Šterna is home to barely 30 residents, primarily farmers, entrepreneurs, or small artisans. A unique attraction for visitors is the nearby Piski Desert, which offers a unique experience.
