Church of St. Florian

  • Built: In the 14th century, it was located in the Koranarija forest.
  • Historical context: The area was once home to a settlement called St. Florian but is now abandoned. Some of its former residents moved to Grožnjan, where they still live today.
  • Positioning: Like all churches and chapels in Grožnjan, St. Florian was positioned so that the bell tower of the parish church in Grožnjan could be seen from its location.
  • Interior feature: It has a unique ceiling fresco.
  • Community gathering: Parishioners gather there for the feast of St. Florian.
  • Unique status: This is the only church in Istria dedicated to St. Florian, which once brought together firefighters from the Croatian, Slovenian, and Italian regions of Istria.

Holy Mass

Holy Mass is no longer celebrated in the chapel.

Prayer:

Almighty, eternal God, who in Your boundless love protected Your servant, St. Florian, from sinful destruction and amidst the clamour of military service kept him safe from the dangers of the world, crowning him with the wreath of martyrdom, You gave him to us as an advocate against destructive fires and devastating floods. We humbly pray that through St. Florian’s intercession, You free us from the fires of sin and its chains. Enlighten and strengthen us with Your heavenly light and power against every sin. Defend and protect our homes and buildings from all dangers of fire and flood. May we, by faithfully fulfilling our duties and observing Your holy law, following the example of St. Florian, become heirs of eternal glory through his intercession. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
