7. Place of the Abduction of Blessed Francesco Bonifacio

7. Place of the Abduction of Blessed Francesco Bonifacio

Our penultimate stop on this thematic route begins at the village of Danieliši, near the cross and memorial plaque marking the Blessed Francesco Bonifacio’s abduction site. From there, we continue along rugged descents and ascents, winding paths leading back toward Peroj, surrounded by idyllic Istrian landscapes.

We reencountered the Parenzana railway route, this time at the former station building in the village of Stanica, located between the Kalcini tunnel and St. Vitus’ Church. Below this point, the trail passes through olive groves near the old municipal cemetery and the now-deconsecrated church of St. Vitus. Finally, a walking path ascends toward the main entrance of the artists’ town, leading to the Chapel of St. Cosmas and Damian with its loggia, the main city gate, the Fonticus city gallery, the Spinotti-Morteani castle-palace, and the main square in front of the parish church.

Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio

Francesco Giovanni Bonifacio, also known as Franjo Bonifacio, was born in Piran on September 7, 1912, and died in Peroj near Grožnjan on September 11, 1946. He is recognized as an Istrian Christian martyr and blessed figure. While returning to Grožnjan and Krasica after hearing confessions and offering spiritual counsel to the parish priest, he was abducted between the villages of Danijeliši and Radanići. A memorial plaque and cross now mark the location of this tragic event.
