2. Walking – Two days

  • Day 1: 18 km
  • Day 2: 20 km

 

Day 1

 

8:30 – Departure from Grožnjan (in front of the parish church of St. Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia)

 

  • Enter the 179-meter-long Kalcini tunnel on the former Parenzana narrow-gauge railway.
  • Stop at a surprising landmark – the world’s smallest chapel. A carved wooden statue of Our Lady is placed inside a large tree trunk, offering an opportunity for daily prayer and the Lord’s Prayer.
  • Continue walking toward the “B10 Olive Oil Boris Galić” sign near Kostanjica.

 

9:45 – Arrival in Kostanjica

 

  • Visit the parish church of St. Peter and Paul.
  • Meet the church’s guardian and caretaker of the parish estate.
  • Short refreshment break at a local farm near the church (optional).

 

10:15 – Continue walking

 

  • Ascend through olive groves, orchards, and vineyards toward the Parenzana trail leading to the picturesque village of Završje.

 

11:25 – Arrival in Završje

 

  • Visit the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

 

Break (40 minutes)

 

  • Enjoy refreshments, a local aperitif, and snacks.
  • Pray to Our Lady and Her Sacred Heart.
  • Meet the guardians of sacred and cultural heritage.
  • Introduction and presentation by the director of the Museum of Folk Instruments and the Multipurpose Cultural Center.
  • Experience a scene inspired by Robin Hood’s life and childhood.

 

12:30 – Continue walking through local hamlets toward final destination, the village of Šterna and the church of St. Michael 

 

14:00 – Arrival in Šterna

 

  • Tour of the church and end of the first day of the two-day walking tour

 

Notes:

  • Each key stop includes 15 to 20 minutes for meditation and quiet reflection.
  • If requested, arrangements can be made for Holy Mass, spiritual talks, and confessions.
  • Sharing experiences and group prayers during evenings depend on the group’s preferences.
  • In 2025, transportation from key points will be organized upon prior notice.

 

Rest and overnight stay in Šterna or organized transfer to Grožnjan for rest and accommodation.

 

Day 2

 

9:30 – Gathering in Šterna in front of the parish church of St. Michael

 

  • Opening prayer and the Lord’s Prayer, followed by a walkabout 300 meters north of the church.
  • Visit the famous “Istrian Sahara” – Piski, and stroll through the dunes.
  • The guide or interpreter leads a meditation reflecting on the desert in the times of Moses and Noah.
  • Return to the main trail and continue walking 1 km toward the church of St. Cantius.

 

10:40 – Arrival at the church of St. Cantius, home to the Šterna local cemetery

 

  • Opportunity for prayer to the Savior.
  • Continue walking west from the church along a gravel path that soon transitions into a forest/hunting trail about 2.5 km long.
  • After passing through dry-stone walled fields and hunting posts, reach the Glavica location and continue left along a forest path for another 20 minutes.

 

11:40 – Arrival at Jugovski Potok, flowing into the Butori waterfall and abyss

 

  • Break for rest and refreshment with vitamin drinks.
  • Meeting with the primary host of the poetry and literature events held here over the past 6-7 years.

 

12:20 – Continuing the walk

 

  • Easy 1.5 km walk along the county road to the traffic sign for the villages of D. Gomila, Bušleti, and Kuberton. Cross to the opposite side of the road, entering the most famous forest of northwestern Istria, Kornarija Forest.
  • This 160-hectare forest is a popular destination for hiking and cycling. The group follows winding forest trails through black pine, oak, and hornbeam trees, arriving at St. Florian’s Chapel.

 

13:35 – Arrival at St. Florian’s Chapel, located in the heart of the protected forest

 

  • Brief history of the chapel and the daily Gospel reading.
  • Exit onto the county road toward the villages of Franci, Ljubići, Martinčići, and Peroj. Continue toward Križ and the memorial plaque marking the last known sighting of Blessed Francesco Bonifacio.

 

15:00 – Arrival at  the memorial site, where Bl. Francesco Bonifacio was kidnapped, between the villages of Danieliši and Radanići

 

  • Meeting with the parish priest or active lay members of the Grožnjan parish for a lecture on Blessed Francesco and guided meditation.
  • Silent return from Križ to Grožnjan via a different route through olive groves and the old cemetery, passing St. Vitus Chapel toward the Chapel of the Holy Spirit and the parish church of Grožnjan. The two-day journey concludes with a meditation on beauty.

 

17:00 – Conclusion of the two-day route

 

  • Rest, dinner, and an evening tour of Grožnjan.
